Hang a wreath over or behind your shutters

When you think home Christmas decorations a wreath will be high on the list. Wreaths are traditionally placed over doors but can also be featured in window areas too. Hanging a wreath behind your shutters can be a lovely addition peeking behind the slats when opened and will also look wonderful from outside of the home adding to the exterior view too. Wreaths can also be hung on the outside of windows too if it takes your fancy – watch them in the winter weather though!

Lay/ hang a Christmas garland

A Christmas garland is always a lovely addition throughout various locations in a home whether you have tried your creative hand as making your own garland from scratch or have bought a lovely shop bought version. Most popularly, garlands are placed on top of fireplaces or around mirrors but they are also idea for windowsills thanks to their flat open surface. If your shutters take up the majority of your sill space, then why not put a garland round the outside of the shutter frame instead?

Turn the window into your canvas

If you’re giving your window area some love this Christmas then don’t forget about the star of the show – the window itself! Frost the windows with spray on snow or invest in hot glue clings that can stick directly onto the glass to turn your window into its own little winter wonderland.

Doily snowflakes

If you fancy trying your hand at something creative or have some little ones in the home to keep entertained, doily snowflakes look lovely in window spaces and are a fun activity to make. If you’re new to doily making then you should easily be able to find some instructions suitable for all the family online!

Hang up Christmassy memorabilia

If looking to hang some items in the window space, then going for obvious choices are sometimes the way forward – it is Christmas after all and if the usual associations with this time of festive spirit aren’t broken then why fix it! Some of our classic favourites are candy canes and Christmas cards too glance at every time you open up your shutter panels or slats.

Christmas plants

Having plants in the home at any time of year can help breathe life into a space and so opting for seasonal options will fit in wonderfully with the rest of your home decorations. If you have a large enough sill space then a poinsettia will sit brilliantly in the window and add those stunning red and green tones that are oh so classically Christmas. You could also hang holly or mistletoe from the top of the window or even the top of your panels if you have this fabulous luxury window dressing in place.

Lights

Adding lights into the window area can add a little sparkle into the room when looking in from the outside and give a lovely glow and warmth to the room. If adding lights into the window space, we recommend going for an understated option to keep an elegant simplicity to the window area (it can be a little easy to get carried away). If you have shutters in your windows or any other standard items in the space, be mindful of the quality of lights you are adding the area and not to hang them directly touching these items to avoid damage.

Decorate trees outside of the window

Finally, a great way to enhance the decoration of your window is to look beyond them. If you have trees or similar on the outside of the window, you can extend the reach of your Christmas decorations by adding some lights or decorations which will look magical on a dark evening.
